Non-Fiction Book Club Recently Celebrated Its 10th Anniversary!

Non-Fiction Book Club Recently Celebrated Its 10th Anniversary!

By: Jessica Fomalont

The Tenth (10th) Anniversary of the DC/SLA Non-Fiction Book Club Meeting met on July 25 and took place at Teaism. We had a really good turn out for the non-fiction book club. A total of Sixteen (16) members gathered together to offer reflections about this title and to share a  general exhuberance with this discussion.

The book selection for this July 2012 event was Too Big to Know: Rethinking Knowledge Now That the Facts Aren’t the Facts, Experts Are Everywhere, and the Smartest Person in the Room Is the Room by David Weinberger.

Like many of our selections, this book provided discussion and insight on our changing profession.  The WorldWideWeb has blurred the line between professionals and amateurs, scientific findings are making their way onto the internet before they are peer reviewed; a footnote on paper is like a nail providing an address for a motivated reader while a hyperlink is an invitation for elaboration and even contradiction.  As librarians, we discussed how we can continue to provide reliable information to our patrons as the definition of expert is changing.

Past and future book selections include titles with an emphasis on knowledge management and technology. The next book will be The Embedded Librarian: Innovative Strategies for Taking Knowledge Where It’s Needed by David Shumaker.  It will take place in October.  A date will be set shortly.
