Are you a current MLS/MLIS student or a member of the Library community interested in exploring your career options? Join us for an evening of refreshments and a panel  discussion providing ideas and advice about careers in Library and Information Science.

  • Marie Kaddell of Lexis Nexis will speaking about “Different Hats For Federal Librarians”
  • Naomi House – editor and founder of INALJ will be speaking about her website
  • Michele Masias of the US Department of Justice will be speaking on successful job interviews

Attendees can also register to attend the event virtually via webinar. Specific webinar information will be sent to those attendees the day before the event.

DC/SLA’s Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration – October 24, 2013

Our Volunteers have made 2013 another fabulous year for DC/SLA! It’s time we recognize them for all their hard work and celebrate how engaged our library community is!

Join us for DC/SLA’s Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration! Whether  you’re a new member, have been a member for years, or you’re considering joining, this is one event you won’t want to miss! Our committees and groups will be staffing tables providing attendees with info about all the amazing work they do and more information on how to get involved. Every DC/SLA volunteer in attendance will be recognized for their contributions. We’ll have plenty of food, alcohol, raffles, and prizes for attendees.

As an added bonus not only is the event FREE to EVERYONE but for the first time ever you’ll have a chance to learn about the DC/SLA Community by playing DC/SLA Family Feud. After we’ve had time to network we’ll host several rounds of DC/SLA Family Feud where teams of attendees work together for a chance to earn even more raffle tickets!

DC/SLA Career Happy Hour

DC/SLA Career Happy Hour

The DC/SLA Employment and Career Resources Committee invites members interested in seeking/giving career advice or making connections to a happy hour at Hamburger Hamlet in Crystal City. This is an unstructured happy hour but attendees are encouraged to exchange business cards and resumes.

When: Wednesday, August 21, 5:30-7:30 pm (drink and appetizer specials until 7 pm)

Where: Hamburger Hamlet, 1750 Crystal Square Arcade, Arlington, VA 22202. We will have a reserved section.

Metro/Parking: Free garage parking at Crystal City Shops after 4 pm. Underground walk from garage and Crystal City Metro.

Price: Everyone pays his/her own tab.

Public Speaking Demystified…Tools, Tips and Tricks for Special Librarians

Public Speaking…few embrace it, many fear it, and no one escapes it.  Regardless of your station on the public speaking spectrum, from rock-star speaker and master of toasts, to hiding under your desk to avoid even the chance of uttering words in public, everyone can improve their public speaking skills.  Perhaps you are comfortable with speaking in public, but just need some tips to jazz up your presentations.  Maybe the frog in your throat or butterflies in your stomach are preventing you from speaking your mind.

Find your voice…at our presentation skills workshop.  Join us for an engaging, fun-filled presentation by two local speakers who are mastering the art of public speaking. Ron Barrett, Vice President of Nonprofit Services National Corporate Research, Ltd. and Lewis Flax, Owner of Flax Associates will be presenting.

  • Tools to improve public presentations
  • Tips to minimize and overcome fear
  • Tricks to make your presentations more memorable

One of the most fundamental skills a librarian can have, no matter their work setting, is writing. Writing itself is such a broad topic that DC/SLA is launching a Writing Series!

Join us for the first installment of our Writing Series: How to Write to Develop a Professional Brand. With so many writing platforms today it’s important to know the strengths and best practices for each platform. Our panelists will help you with just that with three of the most popular digital platforms.

Panel:

  • Naomi House, Reference Marketing and Acquisitions Librarian Census Bureau Library and Editor/Founder/Publisher of I Need a Library Job, will cover how to blog for a professional brand
  • Liba Tomas, Senior Recruiter for NPR, will talk about leveraging writing on LinkedIn to develop your brand
  • Amy Fenning, Senior Brand Marketing Manager with LexisNexis, will discuss best practices for your brand when writing on Twitter
