President’s Message – Spring Forward – By Deena Adelman. Spring is here, the cherry blossoms will be arriving soon, and DC/SLA programming is in full bloom! Winter provided us with an opportunity for introspection, and spring is a great time to put our realizations and plans into motion.

Jane Meyers Receives Prestigious ALA Award and Wins SLA Photography Contest

Jane Meyers Receives Prestigious ALA Award and Wins SLA Photography Contest

Lubuto Library Project founder and president Jane Kinney Meyers is the 2012 recipient of the American Library Association’s 2012 John Ames Humphry / OCLC / Forest Press Award. The annual award is given to a librarian who has made significant contributions to international librarianship throughout their career. ALA’s announcement of the award, which recognizes Jane’s “advancement of libraries, librarianship, literacy and international understanding as a librarian, a teacher, a consultant and an administrator,” states that her “culminating achievement is the establishment of the Lubuto Library Project, a model of sustainable library development and innovation.” The Lubuto Library Project was recently featured here on the DC/SLA blog for their contributions to literacy in Zambia.  To read more about Jane’s contributions to the field, click here to access the ALA news article.

In other news, Jane has won the SLA & Factiva Agile Professional Snap & Win Contest!  Her winning “Creating Community” entry is here: http://t.co/f0oUWkqn, and is also featured on the DC/SLA homepage with this posting.

The voting was close right up until the end.  For those attending the conference, the finalists will be honored by Dow Jones during the Welcome Reception (3-5 pm on Sunday).

Congrats, Jane, on all of your success!!

  • We ring in the new year with chapter president Lois Ireland and ring out 2011 with past-president Mary Talley.
  • We discover that the end-of-year holiday celebration celebrated not just holidays but DC/SLA (and there are photos)
  • We see what was seen around DC/SLA; celebrate awards, accomplishments and adventures; and catch up with what’s new on the DC/SLA web site.
  • We learn the “lessons learned” by librarians facing earthquakes, hurricanes and floods. Planning is the key, according to author Sharon Lenius.

Chapter Notes: September Elections Issue Hot off the Presses

Chapter Notes: September Elections Issue Hot off the Presses

By Lisa Pogue

No Iowa caucuses, televised debates, kissing babies, political tweeting, and especially no eating in diners in New Hampshire. Washington, D.C. marks the end of summer in its own unique way: congress returns from its summer recess and life in the city gets a bit more complicated. DC/SLA, too, marks the end of summer with its own political event: the DC/SLA Board of Directors Election.  But, there’s nothing complicated or difficult about our political event. Read about our stellar slate of candidates in this issue of Chapter Notes and then VOTE!

While we’re at the voting phase for DC/SLA candidates we’ve still at the nominating phase for SLA and DC/SLA awards. Read about the process and start thinking awards.
